Higley Hotdogs on Williamsfield Road, a mile from San Tan Mall by the 202 in Gilbert, is a fabulous roadside food shack! It’s painted in the bright yellow and red colors of the Vienna Beef Company. It’s a walkup diner with outdoor picnic tables sitting on a concrete slab that hasn’t been painted in at least 20 years and a dirt parking lot next to the road, yet it’s so inviting! The owners come from Wisconsin so you can’t pass up the Polish sausage on a Vienna poppy seed bun .
The Chicago style dogs, which are all beef skinless, are not to be missed with all the classic trimmings but you can also add kraut, chili and cheese. The fries are hot and their shakes are homemade…yes, from scratch! They also make a Black Cow Shake that is outstanding. The brats and polishes really hit the mid-western mark with sauerkraut and mustard. Grab a napkin or two, close your eyes and enjoy.
On the downside, I wouldn’t recommend the tamales or the Gyro’s. They were sub-par and dull in taste.
Higley Hotdogs has a very home town feel, the older couple that owns/runs it are very nice and happy. Make sure you get there early for lunch because the line can get long, a tribute to their good food. They close at 5:30 pm and are not open on Sundays.
While I ate at the picnic tables outside, I saw the majority of customers get their food to-go. Most importantly, bring cash, they don’t accept credit cards but the food is extremely reasonable and oh so delish.
