Gun rights activists all over the landscape, including right here in the Northwest, are talking about the weekend revelation from Breitbart.com of a 1995 video of then-Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder telling a Democrat women’s group that the public must be “brainwashed” against guns.
The Daily Caller picked up on the story, which is linked to the Breitbart piece that has a video link. The story is also being reported by TheGunMag.com, which replaced Gun Week in December as the news publication of the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation.
This column has reviewed the video and here is what Holder – now the man in charge of the Justice Department – actually stated:
“One thing that I think is clear with young people and with adults as well is that We have to be repetitive about this. It’s not enough to simply have a catchy ad on a Monday and then only do it on a Monday. We need to do this every day of the week and just really brainwash people into thinking about guns in a vastly different way.”—Eric Holder, 1995, C-Span
There has been no official reaction from either Congressman Darrell Issa or Senator Charles Grassley about this seemingly damning video, but it appears to have convinced a lot of people that Operation Fast and Furious was more than just a “botched gun trafficking scheme.” Instead, those activists now appear certain that the operation, which allowed some 2,000 guns to be walked from Arizona into Mexico – and a similar operation discussed by this column on Friday that has gotten Issa’s attention – were part of a scheme to help the Obama administration push for tougher gun laws.
Whether that’s true, some people point to the new requirement by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that firearms retailers in four Southwest states report multiple long gun purchases. The story is important enough that two different Breitbart reports have been posted, here and here.
After Issa, in an interview with CNN last week, said that Congress has been “lied to” by the Justice Department and “some of the ATF,” a firestorm erupted in the reader comments section of this column. Several people launched character smears against the California Congressman, involving issues that have no connection to the Fast and Furious investigation.
The Breitbart revelation noted:
Holder was addressing the Woman’s National Democratic Club. In his remarks, broadcast by CSPAN 2, he explained that he intended to use anti-smoking campaigns as his model to “change the hearts and minds of people in Washington, DC” about guns.
Also in the video, Holder stated that this “informational campaign” would reach out to celebrities and newspapers, and public school officials. He wanted to work with advertising groups to create messages that would air during prime time television hours to reach youth and their parents.
Whatever else this video does, it solidifies Holder’s reputation as a vehement anti-gunner from a long time back, when he was one of the Clinton administrations “point men” – the other being now-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel – on gun control issues.
I’ve also asked the school board to make a part of every day an anti-violence, anti-gun message.—Eric Holder, 1995
The discovery of this video, which runs for about 3½ minutes, could be political toxic waste for Holder, who has been under fire from Issa and his colleagues on the House Committee for Oversight and Government Reform for several months. Issa has been investigating Fast and Furious for more than a year, in tandem with Sen. Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
