To be hungry, or not to be hungry? This is such an important question for weight loss. Most people who want to lose weight wished they were never hungry. Have you thought that before? Have you ever said to yourself, “Self, I wish you didn’t have an appetite and then maybe you can lose weight.” Well, I’m here to tell you this is one of the most damaging fallacies for weight loss.
Hunger, (physical hunger) is actually a great thing. It’s your body telling you that it physically needs nutrients and calories to sustain itself and give it energy. This can only occur when your metabolism is burning calories and functioning. If you are never hungry, your metabolism is slow and you’re not burning many calories throughout your day. One of the biggest keys to sustainable weight loss is speeding up your metabolism, and keeping it there. If you go through most of your days not hungry, your body is holding on to calories, not burning them. This is not good!
Those who don’t eat breakfast first thing in the morning will tell you that they’re never hungry when they get up. Of course they’re not! They have conditioned their body and metabolism to get hungry later in the day by never eating breakfast. This means that their metabolism is extremely slow and sluggish until they finally have that first meal. This could be hours of valuable calorie burning time that they’re missing.
Let’s use this analogy: Think of your metabolism as a camp fire. The faster and higher the fire burns, the faster your metabolism is. If the fire is out, your metabolism is stalled. Now, how do you keep a camp fire burning? Do you go hours without feeding it wood and then all of a sudden throw a big log onto it? Of course not. That would put out the fire. That’s the same as not eating breakfast or going all day without a meal and then having a large meal to compensate. To build the fastest fire, you need to slowly feed it small pieces of wood as often as possible. Same with your metabolism. You must feed it small meals, eat them slowly, and eat them often. Starting with Breakfast!
If you typically eat around 1600 calories a day, but eat them over 2 meals you’re doing yourself a disservice. Just spreading those calories into 5 – 320 calorie meals will kick your metabolism into high gear and you’ll notice yourself losing weight without having to eat less food. Your body will become a fat burning furnace. You’ll have more energy and will be hungry more often, and that’s a good thing.
You need to start embracing your hunger. When you’re physically hungry, eat something small and healthy. If you don’t, your body will just hold onto each calorie you eventually take in.
Now note that I have mentioned “Physically Hungry” a few times. There’s a big difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. That’s for the next article. For now, just pause when you’re hungry and ask yourself, “Self, am I physically hungry?” Just by pausing and asking yourself you may notice that you’re just hungry because of emotions of habit. Don’t eat if that’s the case.
But if you are physically hungry, feed your hunger and enjoy it! Having a fast metabolism is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. You don’t have to worry about eating something bad and it showing up on your thighs. You can afford to cheat from time to time and your body will just burn it right up! You don’t have to be obsessed with calories and dieting. You’ll have more energy. You’ll be a happier, healthier person, and that’s all we want for you!
Here’s to hunger!
