If you live in Harrisburg and have ever had to get around without your vehicle, you probably found out that your options are quite limited. Many people regard local bus and taxi services as being inadequate; so most rent a car while their vehicle is in the shop. This can be quite inconvenient though because alternative transportation must be found to even get to the property where the rental is located! Well, there is a new type of car rental industry taking Europe by storm called car sharing; a more practical process that may one day make current car rental companies obsolete in cities like Harrisburg.
At the forefront of this industry is a joint venture founded by the BMW Group and Sixt AG last April called DriveNow. DriveNow allows its members to rent and drop-off vehicles at roadside, whereever and whenever they need them. Locating a convenient vehicle relative to their current location can be done by viewing a map on Drive-Now’s smartphone app or website. The service is designed to ensure that members always have access to an available vehicle within half a mile of any given location within the business area.
To become a member, an application must be completed on either their website or mobile app and a registration fee of $38.35 must be paid. A DriveNow ID is then picked up at a DriveNow registration station.
If a member wants to rent a vehicle they can do so immediately upon spotting one on the street as long as the DriveNow screen inside the vehicle is green instead of red. There is also the option of reserving one they find online for up to 15 minutes before they arrive at it. The DriveNow ID is attached to the driver’s license and used as a keyless entry to lock/unlock the vehicle doors. Once inside, the member enters their pin number and presses the “Start Reservation” button to start the car and the rental period. The cost is only 29 Eurocents per-minute which includes gas and parking. The period ends when the member exits the vehicle and locks the doors.
Being able to rent a vehicle and then drop it off at anytime is something that is sorely needed in Harrisburg. If they take location requests, they definitely have my vote!
