Des Moines, IA —
The Iowa Barnstormers came off of a disappointing 2011 season by traveling to Spokane under new head coach Mike Hohensee Monday night. The Barnstormers, led by 3rd-year Arena Football League quarterback J.J. Raterink, handed the Shock an overtime loss, finishing the game 69-63. The win helped propel the Barnstormers from unranked in the league’s Coaches Poll to fourth. The win was the first for the franchise under Hohensee.
Jumping to a quick 7-0 lead on the very first play of the game, Raterink connected with receiver Jesse Schmidt for a 30-yard score. Raterink would finish the game with 23 passing completions out of 34 attempts for 284 yards, 7 touchdowns and only one sack. Raterink found Schmidt for three additional scores for the night.
In a scoring battle, the Shock were able to keep pace with the Barnstormers as quarterback Erik Meyer went 25 of 45 passing for 294 yards, six touchdowns and three sacks. Adam Froman also came in at quarterback for the Shock and went three of five passing for 52 yards and one touchdown. Meyer was intercepted two times while Froman was intercepted once.
In the Barnstormer’s second possession of the first quarter, Marco Thomas was able to get things started with an 18-yard rushing play. Raterink then found Thomas open for a 12-yard completion and first down. On the next play, Raterink connected with Schmidt for the second touchdown of the game, followed by a good kick by Craig Camay.
The Barnstormers went into the locker room tied with the Shock at 35-35 following a 58-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jason Simpson (Iowa) and a five-yard score on the ground by Meyer (Spokane).
Opening the second half, the Barnstormers scored quickly on a single passing play to Chris Matthews and the following Camay kick put the Iowa team ahead 42-35. Spokane struggled in their first offensive possession, however, watching three completions and a drive turn into four incompletions and a turnover on downs after Meyer was sacked by Alfred Peterson. Raterink capitalized by hitting Schmidt on the second play for a touchdown, putting the Barnstormers up by 14 points. Iowa’s quick-strike offense ignited with Matthews catching another touchdown. Linebacker John Mohring (Iowa) was able to return a failed onside kick for six yards and a touchdown, but Spokane was able to match Iowa’s scores and then tie the game in the final minute of regulation by returning a missed Camay field goal the length of the field.
Entering overtime, Spokane won the coin toss. However Iowa’s defense forced Froman to throw an interception to Simpson. A mere two plays later, Raterink found Thomas open for a 30-yard touchdown that sealed the victory for the Barnstormers.
Raterink’s strike to receiver Marco Thomas earned the ‘Cutters Catch of the Week’ award on the Arena Football League level.
