The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk will be on display at the de Young Museum from March 24, 2012 – August 19, 2012. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk exhibition is organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier and is the first major exhibition dedicated to celebrating the French designer. Haute couture and prêt-a-porter ensembles which were created between the years of 1970 and 2010 will be on display. Scenic context of the exhibit ranges from the boudoir to graffiti streets to the catwalk. JoliCoeur International are the official suppliers of the animated mannequins who talk and sing in vignettes which enhance the reveolutionary work of Gaultier.
The exhibit contains numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs, and video clips that spotlight Gaultier’s collaborations with filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians, most notably Madonna. Jean Paul was in town for the opening of the exhibition and signed the wall at the entrance of the exhibition. On March 24, 2012, live streaming of the conversation between Suzy Menkes who is the fashion editor for the International Herald Tribune and Jean Paul Gaultier took place from the de Young Museum’s Koret Auditorium.
On March 30, 2012 at 7:00 PM, Dr. Kimberly Chrisman – Campbell will give a lecture on Jean Paul Gaultier. “Jean Paul Gaultier: Rewriting History,” will focus on Jean Paul Gaultier’s influence on fashion and the catwalk. Lectures at the de Young Museum are free and are available at the front of the auditorium beginning at 5:30 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the lecture begins promptly at 7:00 PM. Dr. Chrisman – Campbell is an art historian whose areas of expertise include European fashion and textiles and French and British arts of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
