The crowd, giddy with anticipation, positively lit up as Dame Julie Andrews made her regal appearance on Target’s Children’s Stage at LA’s 17th annual Festival of Books, held on the USC campus Sunday, April 22nd. Ms. Andrews narrated her newest installment of The Fairy Princess series, The Very Fairy Princess: Here Comes the Flower Girl.
The event couldn’t have been more appropriately timed as Target and Disney were also celebrating National Princess Week. Promoters passed out golden crowns and children, in all their newfound royal glory, held onto every word Andrews read. What a moment, to be read to by the most famous ‘princess’ of all.
Ms. Andrews animatedly narrated the story of a young princess’ journey as a flower girl, and all the many unexpected glitches that come with planning a wedding. Andrews spoke with grandeur and gestured a regal wave at the appropriate times of the book. The audience was completely absorbed into her story-telling ability.
Ms. Andrews allowed time for a question and answer, encouraging questions to come from the children. She referenced the opening scene from The Sound of Music as one of her most memorable movie moments, and described the videographer that had to dangle from the helicopter to get the shot just right. Other commenters in the audience used their moment with the microphone to plug their latest little-known publication, to which Andrews graciously acknowledged and gently encouraged further interaction from the children.
Andrews thanked the crowd of prince’s and princess’ and was whisked off to her signing tent by her chariot (a sporty golf cart). The crowd swarmed the cart, hoping for a glimpse, a moment, to have with Ms. Andrews. The signing line was limited to 100 golden tickets that entitled them to meet Ms. Andrews and have her sign a copy of their books.
The stars certainly aligned by having Julie Andrews narrate her new Fairy Princess book during National Princess Week. What a lucky crowd of princes and princesses indeed!
