AXE, the makers of body sprays and washes targeting young men, took over the bar and ping pong tables at Spin New York on April 25 to promote its latest product, AXE Sport Blast. Headlining the event, model/actress Kate Upton and New York Giants defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul competed in a series of five “challenges” to raise funds for sports-related charities.
The media crowd noshed on small passed plates and signature cocktails—including a Sport Blast Berry Boost (recipe below)—and took turns trying out the whimsical challenges for themselves, including a football toss, balance beam walk and giant-screen Pictionary-style paint program. AXE’s new Sport Blast product, a 2-in-1 shampoo and shower gel, took center stage briefly, when a representative introduced the new marketing campaign and the evening’s contestants.
When it was time for the real competition, Upton (the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover model and currently appearing as sexy/sweet nun Sister Bernice in “The Three Stooges”) was energetic and ready to throw down the gauntlet. In a surprising twist (the host/announcer swore was unplanned), Upton handily won the football toss, while JPP took top honors in a mock modeling catwalk. Tied at two events each, it was JPP who took home gold by winning the Pictionary round, getting audience members to guess sport-themed movies through his sketches.
We asked Super Bowl XLVI winner JPP which is harder, facing off against a 250-lb offensive lineman or a 100-lb (or so) supermodel? “She’s very beautiful, and very cool. But she wasn’t a distraction while I was competing. We made chemistry: I’d do it again.”
For her part, Upton (who rides horses competitively) was equally unfazed by her 6′ 5″, 285-pound opponent. “My horse is 1,200 pounds. He’s definitely harder to go up against than Jason!”
