Youtube celebrity Kevin Wu (aka KevJumba) stars in a new comedy film “Hang Loose” which premieres at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival in May.
Kevin recently answered a few questions about the project.
Tell us about your new film.
Hang Loose is a fun flick starring Myself, Dante Basco, and Justin Chon. We decided to shoot a movie in Hawaii, cast our friends, and create something fun for the audience to see.
What inspired the project?
Hang Loose is a coming-of-age film. It’s about a naive 18 year old named Kevin, who must go to Hawaii to attend the wedding of his big sister. The day before the wedding he goes on a misadventure with his future brother in law (Dante) and his crazy groomsmen that changes his life. I wanted to tell this story because it’s all about a kid out of high school, looking to find his identity.
How did you finance the film?
We paid out of our pocket. We partnered with Kinetic films, who agreed to put-up the financing for the film. It’s a low-budget movie, but i’m grateful we were able to get it made.
What was the most challenging thing about making your first film?
The most challenging aspect is finding a group of people (crew, actors, producers, etc.) that all want to make the best movie they can make. With very little money to make a film, you have to surround yourself with passionate people. And that’s what we did for Hang Loose.
What advice do you have for aspiring Youtubers and Indie filmmakers?
I’m always very adamant about doing things on your own and not waiting around. If you want to be a filmmaker, turn on your camera and go make something.
