The 2012 KCA nominees for Favorite Movie Actor are:
Jim Carrey – Five-time category winner Carrey was selected this year for his turn in Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a film that broke even at the box office and with critics, but which appears to have been quite popular with kids ages 6-14. Carrey’s face-contorting, body-bending antics are surely part of the appeal, but in the end it may be that modern kids like Popper for much the same reason that their 1997 counterparts went for Carrey’s Liar Liar. Both films feature a divorced couple angling toward reconciliation–a fantasy central to many kids’ lives.
Johnny Depp – Depp has taken this category twice already, and is back once more as the mumbling, bumbling Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He is also nominated for his voice work in Rango. Speaking of voice work, he further delighted kids in 2011 by voicing Captain Jack for Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. There is a lot of Depp for kids to love.
Daniel Radcliffe – Mr. Radcliffe is doing a fine job of transitioning from his Harry Potter persona into more thrilling adult fare like The Lady in Black, but kids are not ready to let go just yet, as this year they finally gave him the Favorite Movie Actor nod for Deathly Hallows, Part 2.
Adam Sandler – Another five-time category winner returns to the line-up, this time for the critically panned Jack and Jill. At 38% fresh per Rottentomatoes, it would appear that even kids may not have liked it all that much. Perhaps their affection for his past work helped nudge him over the line.
How will Kansas City families vote?
nextooze.com spoke to Raymore mother of two Tara Hatfield, who reports that she does not rely on MPAA ratings alone to guide her choices. “A lot of times it’s the actors and their work in other movies,” says Hatfield, who feels that KCA favorite Adam Sandler still has trouble zeroing in on genuine family fare. “Johnny Depp plays a lot of dark roles,” she adds. “He’s a great actor for older kids, but not so much for the younger ones.”
Among her family’s recent favorites is Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. “Duane Johnson is awesome in kids’ movies. Whatever he does in his other films, he has proven he knows how to keep it at a kid’s level.”
