The 2012 KCA nominees for Favorite Reality Show are:
American Idol (Fox) – Winning five Blimps out of six nominations since 2005, Idol looks like the clear favorite. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler joined Randy Jackson last season to change the judging chemistry in a big way. Production values were elevated as well. Where in the past Idol seemed to secretly revel in knocking its contestants down–presenting them alone in the middle of a vast empty stage, with a poor audio mix and acoustic conditions that could spur pitch problems in even the most talented vocalists–this year they have improved staging, sets, screen composition, audio mix, and have somehow miraculously corrected the “pitchiness”. The result is a slate of contestants that demonstrates more than just raw talent, but real technical prowess and professionalism.
America’s Funniest Home Videos (ABC) – Nickelodeon exclaims that AFV “has been making us LOL for as long as we can remember”. This is literally the case for Nick’s key demographics as AFV first aired in 1989, ten or more years before most of today’s tweens were born. With a proven format as well as an endless supply of fish-hooked nostrils and golf balls to the crotch, AFV continues to elicit big laughs from kids and parents alike.
America’s Got Talent (NBC) – Featuring not just singers, but dancers, comedians, magicians and more, AGT is an old school talent show. Co-created by Idol‘s long-time “mean judge” Simon Cowell, what sets it apart is its celebration of so many kinds of talents, inspiring the dream of stardom in a wider array of hopefuls. On the air since 2006, it received its first nomination for Favorite Reality Show last year.
Wipeout (ABC)– Pitting contestants against one another on what it claims to be the world’s largest obstacle course, Wipeout has proven to be quite popular with kids, receiving its third consecutive KCA nomination. But can it win the Blimp this year? One thing that could be curbing a decisive victory is the show’s TV-PG L rating for infrequent coarse language, which may be a bit racy for Nickelodeon’s TV-G crowd–or, more precisely, for the crowd’s parents.
Where do Kansas City kids stand? Reigning champ American Idol may be losing some KC love, not having held auditions here since Season 8, the year after Kansas City’s David Cook won the competition–having auditioned three hours away in Omaha. The closest they have been since was this year’s fly-by in St. Louis.
Do KC kids still dream of Idol stardom? Watch tomorrow night to find out.
