It doesn’t seem possible, but Ironman Texas 70.3 is probably even more anticipated than Lance Armstrong’s pro debut in Ironman Panama.
Nobody really knew what to expect from Lance in his inaugural journey into the pro triathlon arena.
Of course the world is well aware of Lance’s prowess on a road bike, but triathlon also includes a swim and a run and up until the Panama race these were unknown quantities when it came to Lance Armstrong and his ability to manage all three events.
As it turns out, Lance acquitted himself exceptionally well and held his own in the swim portion of the race and of course followed it up with the strong bike leg that everyone expected. However what was totally unexpected was his running prowess.
Lance forged to the front right after leaving the bike/run transition area and looked for all the world like he would never be caught.
It took an incredible effort by Olympian Bevan Docherty to relegate Lance to second spot on the podium.
One thing is for sure, Lance and his team will make adjustments for the upcoming race on April 1, 2012 and it would be no surprise at all to see Lance try and create a bigger cushion out on the bike course so he has more of a lead going into the run.
The 2012 version of Ironman Texas 70.3 will be showcasing some of the best pros in the world and Lance will have his work cut out for him.
Timothy O’Donnell from the U.S.A is a super-fast runner and will most likely go into the race as an early favorite. Michael Raelert is also speedy and has a legitimate shot at the top spot on the podium.
Lance Armstrong may attempt to de-fuse the running prowess of these top pros by forcing the pace on the bike and in the process, make them burn out their legs and as a result be less effective in the run.
It could well be a winning strategy especially if the weather conditions play in Lance’s favor.
The Ironman Texas 70.3 bike course is fast and flat with strong cross-winds the norm and this will no doubt work in Lance’s favor as he is used to biking in difficult circumstances.
Ironman Texas 70.3 promises to be a race for the ages and you can follow the action as it happens on race day Sunday April 1, 2012 on Ironstruck.com.
