With only hours until showtime, the anticipation for this year’s 27th Annual Portland Ice Arena Show is growing. And if tonight’s dress rehearsals were any indication of what the actual performances will be, skating fans won’t want to miss it: 111 skaters will perform over 30 solos and at least 8 group numbers over the 2 performances Saturday and Sunday night.
So which group number will be the crowd favorite this year?
A few years back that honor may have gone to an ever popular adult group number, ‘Germinal Hospital’, which included some questionable health care. A bit younger of a group also performed to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, complete with ghouly girls in mummified skating dresses. But every year, the Tots number gets the ‘oohs’ and ‘soooo cute’ award for some – you just never know with them what they will do, since most of them are between the ages of 4 and 6.
This year’s theme, ‘Heroes and Villains’, created a broad cast of characters to choose from, but rumor has it there could be an appearance by Indiana Jones, some Wicked witches, Zoro, Wonder Woman, Austin Powers, and some gangsters who happen to ice dance.
The largest group number (and perhaps one of the largest if not THE largest group number in the show’s history) will feature 26 skaters – a dragon, maidens, princes, princesses and damsels in distress. Set to an upbeat version of ‘I Need a Hero’ from ‘Shrek’, the number will show a variety of skating skills, style, and of course, power.
Coaches Ann Hanson and Kristin Andrews had the task of choregraphing the group. Per Kristin, “Funneling the excitement and utilizing the talent can be a challenge with the Fresstyle D group, but always worth it in the end.”
Show times are Saturday night at 7pm and Sunday night at 5pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Contact PIA for more information and/or tickets.
