The 24th Annual Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Arizona will be held this year at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess on Friday May 18th. Share our Strength, for those of you that don’t know, is a national organization with the goal of ending childhood hunger in the United States. They are responsible for hosting several events, such as The Great American Bake Sale and Taste of the Nation, across the country. Unlike many events of its kind, all proceeds from this event go directly to help with hunger in Arizona, through St. Mary’s Food Bank and the Arizona Association of Food Banks.
The event features the Valley’s top chefs and mixologists coming together to donate their time, talent and passion to end childhood hunger in America. Currently, this year’s restaurant lineup includes 5th and Wine, The Herb Box and Nourish (Old Town Scottsdale), Bistro 24 (Ritz Carlton – Biltmore), Bourbon Steak and La Hacienda (Fairmont Scottsdale Princess), Deseo (Westin Kierland), Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar – DC Ranch, Province (The Westin Downtown), Sassi (Pinnacle Peak), Enchantment Resort (Sedona), and Graze Desert Grille at Zona Hotel and Suites. Each restaurant is assigned a city from San Francisco to Miami that must be the basis of their cuisine – hence “Taste the Nation”.
The evening starts off with a mixology competition, with each mixologist competing for judge’s choice, people’s choice and all around bragging rights. The drinks will be based on the city the restaurant was assigned. During the mixology, small appetizers will be served and guests will get a chance to review and bid on some fantastic silent auction items, from sports memorabilia to hotel stays to nights at the symphony.
Then, at 7:30, the ballroom doors will open and the guests will enter and gaze upon the tables that have been lavishly decorated by each restaurant to match their theme. At their seats will be a fabulous gift bag with treats donated by many of the valley’s very generous merchants. Each table of ten people will then be treated to an excellent 5-course meal, paired with wines.
Many companies have already stepped up and contributed to the event, the silent auction, or the gift bags. Surprisingly, some large, valley based companies that derive a great deal of their income from people in the valley, such as Troon Golf and Fox Restaurant Concepts, declined to participate.
This year, there are three types of tickets. Just $25 (in advance; $50 at the door) grants you admission to the mixology competition. All-you-can-drink cocktails for $25 cannot be found anywhere else in Scottsdale. The next step up is general admission. For just $125, you will enjoy the mixology competition and the delicious 5-course dinner. Finally, the VIP tickets ($225), allow you to enjoy the mixology competition for thirty minutes earlier than general admission, select the restaurant of your choice and receive an upgraded gift bag. Additionally, full table purchases as well as sponsorship packages are available.
