The popular island of Ambergris Caye in Belize has seen an upward trend toward more luxury resorts and hotels over the past several years. The condo style resort is emerging as a top choice for discerning luxury travelers wanting the best of a five star resort, but with the creature comforts of home.
During a recent trip to Belize, this Luxury Hotels Examiner had the opportunity to stay in one of The Phoenix Resort’s 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxurious condos overlooking the beach in the northern part of the town of San Pedro.
The Phoenix Resort recently earned the distinguished honor of being rated #1 Hotel in the World in the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2012, and after checking the property out myself, the accolades are well-deserved.
Offering the perks luxury travelers expect from well-known large five star chain resorts, but without sacrificing the family-owned, small island vibe that San Pedro is known for, The Phoenix Resort is the ideal luxury property if you are looking to stay in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Belize.
The Phoenix Resort Suites
Rooms at The Phoenix Resort are actually luxury one, two, and three bedroom condo suites with open living areas, gourmet kitchens, spa like bathrooms, and expansive verandas.
The open kitchens feature GE stainless steel appliances, Kohler fixtures, and granite countertops with drop down breakfast bar, while the tropical living rooms include two couches, a large flat screen TV and DVD player.

The luxurious master bedroom includes a king bed with Serta pillow top mattress with 300 thread count sheets. The ensuite bath has a large Jacuzzi tub and separate shower, with counter space for multiple people to get ready simultaneously. Marble countertops with Aveda bath amenities make for the perfect retreat after a long day of adventure. The Phoenix Resort is the only property in Belize currently licensed to carry Aveda products.
The walk in closet in the master is rather impressive and certainly outdoes any luxury five star hotels I’ve stayed in elsewhere around the globe. iPod docking stations, a reading chair, and a flatscreen TV in the master round out the amenities.
If you are trying to pack light for your Belize vacation, the condo suites at The Phoenix have their own washer and dryer in the units, so you can forego the heavy luggage.
Have kids accompanying you? Young and grown kids alike will delight in The Phoenix Resort’s complimentary iPads, Kindles, and Wiis. Note — these are available on a first come, first serve basis.
The Phoenix Resort is beachfront, but is set off slightly with a low fence and gate, keeping unwanted guests and the random beach vendors out. Ambergris Caye has a very low number of locals peddling wares on the beach as compared to many other Caribbean nations, so if you are hoping to escape it all, this is your spot.
There is an onsite spa and fitness center that even offers yoga classes (extra fee). Get an early morning workout or relax with one of their signature spa treatments. The Phoenix Resort is currently the only property in San Pedro to offer an onsite fitness center. The Sol Spa has earned a loyal following from both locals and travelers alike.
The owners of The Phoenix Resort also operate the very popular Blue Water Grill Restaurant, Wine de Vine, Caliente, and the onsite Red Ginger restaurant. Red Ginger is open daily, except for Tuesdays, and offers an incredible Sunday brunch worth checking out as well. If you are spending the day lounging by the pool, Red Ginger provides poolside drink and food service. During your stay at The Phoenix, you will receive a card that entitles you to a small discount at their other restaurants and wine shop.
The pools at The Phoenix are superb, but may be a bit chilly in the colder times of the year. Lay out by, or even in, the main pool and catch some rays, with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea just a few feet away. The Phoenix also offers a lap pool if you want to get in a pool workout. Both the two-tiered Infinity edge main pool and the lap pool are saline, believed to be more delicate on the skin, eyes, and hair versus traditional chlorinated ones. The Phoenix Resort is one of the only properties in Belize to feature two pools on property.
Location of The Phoenix Resort
Although on the northern end of San Pedro, The Phoenix is a short walk away from countless restaurants, bars, tour operators, and dive shops. About five minutes north is Chuck & Robbie’s Dive Shop that this Examiner uses exclusively, and who The Phoenix often works with. The Phoenix has a list of preferred tour operators and can coordinate nearly any activity back on the mainland that you are hoping to enjoy during your holiday.
Much like you will find nearly everywhere on the island, the customer service at The Phoenix Resort is top-notch. In general, people are naturally friendly and always helpful to tourists visiting Ambergris Caye.
The Phoenix Resort will arrange airport transfers from San Pedro if need be and someone is on hand 24 hours a day for any assistance you may need. A delicious welcome Red Ginger punch is provided at check-in, which you can settle in and enjoy after your walk through. The staff will typically address you by name and are accustomed to dealing with luxury travelers looking for the perfect getaway. That being said, if you have not been to Ambergris Caye, it is a small island with a very local feel so take that into consideration with any requests you may be used to from luxury properties in large cities elsewhere around the globe.
