Have you finished the latest Vince Flynn Mitch Rapp novel and are looking for a new fast paced novel filled with action. Do you still need a book for the train or car ride to and from work. Sometimes its hard to find the time to select new novels or authors that contain fast paced plots, plenty of action or good detective novels with a new slant. Some of my favorites are listed below:
The Scarecrow Returns by Mike Reilly. For Action junkies.
This new novel, the first in a few years in Reilly’s Scarecrow series does not require you to read any of the other books. The plot is simple. A Small team of civilians, marines and an great armed robot must stop terrorists in Antartica from destroying the northern hemisphere with an old Soviet doomsday weapon. Action packed, fast paced novel.
Shock Wave by John Sanford. Sandord’s latest Virgil Flowers detective novel might be his best yet in this new series set in the similar setting as his long time Prey novels. Flowers is a smart creative detective who wears bad tee shirts and has bad manners, but just solves crimes.
Pocket-47 by Jude Hardin a hot firecracker of a detective novel. Previously reviewed in this column.
Alex Berenson’s John Wells novels. Wells is a former spy and Ranger who is now an independent operator, who helps out the CIA with assignments in the Middle East. The first novel was the The Faithful Spy. Last year’s Secret Soldier was excellent. His latest is called the Shadow Patrol and takes place in after a real incident in Afghanistan, recounted in the novel, in which 10 members of the CIA mission there were killed by a double agent. Now there seems to something funny going on at the CIA mission as important contacts are getting killed. Meanwhile a young Marine is gunned down by his own men, when he witnesses a drug deal between an Afghan warlord and members of his own unit. Wells is sent overseas to check out the situation and the crooked spies and marines must be dealt with. Another great read.
Don Winslow is a very good novelist who writes about California situations involving surfers, private detectives and drug deals gone south. Savages, a novel that was published last year is a tour de force about young California drug dealers, their girlfriend and a Mexican cartel filled with blood thirsty drug dealers who want to take over the California operation. There are no good guys in this story, but Winslow fast pacing and excellent dialogue will keep you enthralled.
Robert Crais is probably one of the two best cop detective novelists writing today. He has a new series with an ex operator called Joe Pike. The first book is called The Watchman. The next is called The First Rule. You will like them
If you like spy novels, the Tourist by Olen Stenhauser is a book to try. Its not like the movie.
Daniel Silva also writes novels about an Israeli assassn known as Gabriel Allon, who is an art restorer. There are 13 or 14 of the books on the market. They are very popular. The first one is The Kill Artist. Its a great series.
Try Lee Child. He has written a bunch of books about a former MP named Jack Reacher, who at over 6′ 6″ is a master of unarmed combat and packs a shrewd mind as well. They are mostly very good to excellent. The first one is the Killing Floor.
Ben Coes is another up and comer author His first thriller wa published last year. It was called Power Down. His latest book is called Coup D’ Etat.
Another author you might like is Brad Taylor, who is writing a series like Vince Flynn. His first novel is One Rough Man. It has a lots of action. His latest hardcover is All Necessary Force, and when they say force they mean it.
Lastly, check out the Bricklayer by Noah Boyd. Its also very good.
