After the worst off season ever, the Miami Dolphins hope to win back the local south Florida fan base with their picks in the 2012 NFL Draft which begins tonight at 8 PM EST.
The Miami Dolphins were rejected by former Titans and current Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher, former Colt and Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning (who is now a Bronco), and former Green Bay Packers backup QB Matt Flynn (who is now a Seahawk). Not only did the Dolphins lose out in Free Agency, but they also decided to trade their best offensive weapon, WR Brandon Marshall, to the Chicago Bears for a pair of 3rd round picks. As dejected as the fans are, a good draft would go a long way in keeping them engaged this season.
Many experts and NFL mock drafts have the Miami Dolphins drafting Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill, who only has a total of 19 collegiate starts under his belt. While he does possess all the physical tools needs to play QB in the NFL at a high level, he is unproven and taking him 8th overall is a big reach. The Dolphins would love to trade down in the draft but it seems as if every team outside the top 5 is looking to do the same. Miami has holes at Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Defensive End, and Safety – but drafting for need might be a mistake. Taking the best player available might serve the Dolphins best, which is going to depend upon what direction the teams in front of them go.
We already know the Indianapolis Colts will make Stanford QB Andrew Luck the number one pick. The Washington Redskins will take Baylor QB Robert Griffin III after trading up to the number two spot. After that – it’s a toss up. I expect the Minnesota Vikings to take Matt Kalil, the Tackle out of USC with the number three pick. With the 4th pick in the NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns could go one of three ways, WR, RB, or CB. I think they will go WR to give Colt McCoy another weapon and take Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon. Falling into the lap of the Tampa Bay Bucs is Alabama RB Trent Richardson – they won’t be able to send this pick to the commissioner quick enough. After trading down to allow the Redskins to take RGIII with the 2nd pick, the St. Louis Rams, who need a WR, take Michael Floyd, the wideout from Notre Dame. The Jacksonville Jaguars need to build up their Defense and will do so by taking the best cornerback in the draft, LSU’s Morris Claiborne.
This brings us to the Miami Dolphins NFL draft pick. Unless they end up trading down or pull something out of left field, they have their choice of Ryan Tannehill, the BC linebacker Luke Kuechly, or Mark Barron from Alabama – the best Safety in the draft. I would be fine with any of these picks, assuming they would allow Tannehill to hold a clipboard and ride the pine for a year. If I were the GM, I’d go with Luke Kuechly, who is destined to be a Pro Bowl MLB. However, Dolphin’s GM Jeff Ireland doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to the draft so I’m going to say he caves from the pressure of Owner Stephen Ross and takes QB Ryan Tannehill. Let’s just hope they are smart and don’t rush his development.
Who am I kidding? This kid [Ryan Tannehill] is doomed to be a bust.
