It’s back! The television hit of the 80’s that gave Johnny Depp his start, is now a hilarious film starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Two high school students join the police force to become the strong arm of the law and get their first assignment on bike patrol. After they fail to make their first arrest, they are transferred to the 21 jump street division to help improve a failing department.
Jonah Hill plays Schmidt, a high school geek that enters the police academy to finally get respect. With lack of popularity in high school and failing his chances at college he joins the police force to finally get the recognition he deserves. As a contrast, Channing Tatum plays Jenko, a high school jock that everybody loves who struggles with graduating. He decides to join the police academy and hope to continue to use his athletic abilities. These two help bring along a failing department that needs a new up beat tempo, performed well by this team.
With excellent support from the rest of the cast, the comedy just keeps on going. Ice Cube plays Captain Dickson of the 21 jump street division that uses an unorthodox system of management to get his undercover officers to perform. His crude manner and delivery kept me laughing and brings everything together. Dave Franco plays Eric Molson, the popular smart student that is the one to get to know. He helps keep the story together with his devious delivery and believable actions. Lastly, Brie Larson plays Molly Tracey, the beautiful girl that catches Schmidt’s eye and tries to get the relationship he always desired. Molly, is a popular drama student that knows everyone and can help Schmidt get closer to the drug dealer they are trying to catch.
I think this film is hilarious! It just kept me laughing. With the wonderful acting and comedy skills from the entire cast, it was very entertaining. From the beginning, with Jonah as the geek and Channing as the jock, it has a drive that just kept me rolling in the isles. With excellent comedy and superb action scenes, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller turn it into a great success. Bringing back this television-hit series was a successful move and I recommend this film. But, it does include a lot of crude language, some sexual scenes, drugs, and lots of teen drinking.
Final Grade: I give this a B+, for it’s excellent comedy and good storyline.
