Trying desperately to join the military and fight for his country during World War II, weakling Steve is finally allowed entry through an experimental program after catching the eye of a government scientist. When the program experiments transform him into a physically superior soldier named Captain America, Steve becomes determined to destroy Hydra and the Red Skull.
Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve), Hayley Atwell (Peggy), Sebastian Stan (Bucky), Tommy Lee Jones (Col. Phillips), Hugo Weaving (Schmidt/Red Skull), Dominic Cooper (Stark), Richard Armitage (Kruger), Stanley Tucci (Erskine), Samuel L. Jackson (Fury), Toby Jones (Zola), Neal McDonough (Dum Dum).
Captain America: The First Avenger begins well with good history, background, and plot setup but ends up dwelling on the elements far to long. About the time we begin to wonder if this film is going anywhere Captain America leaps into action and things get a bit more interesting. But after extensive setup and background the film seems to gloss over or skip some of the main plot points and feel rushed. We are left with an ending whose only purpose seems to be a sequel which we hope will do a better job of telling the story.
Acting was a mix here with Evans and Atwell doing okay but lacking energy at times. Jones and Weaving brought a good level of quality to the film as did Cooper and Stan. The remainder of the supporting cast did fairly well and brought more depth to the film.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all nicely done and the film had a surprisingly solid, quality feel through most scenes. Physical effects and CGI were good and blended with the film well. Red Skull’s mask was particularly well done with good contrast. Dialogue was okay but could have done more to detail the storyline. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall Captain America: The First Avenger felt much more like an entry level action adventure film than a big screen adaptation of one of the most popular Marvel comics ever. Franchise fans may be somewhat disappointed while others may find the film mildly entertaining.
With some sci-fi violence and action this should be fine for preens and above.
Captain America: The First Avenger is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
