Some rumblings in the ground bring volcanologist Harry to the quiet mountain town of Dante’s Peak, named after the dormant volcano nearby. Examining the volcano Harry realizes his worst fears are about to come true, the volcano is preparing to erupt. Desperately trying to convince the townspeople of the danger they are in they are still unprepared when the volcano suddenly erupts.
Pierce Brosnan (Harry), Linda Hamilton (Rachel), Jamie Smith (Lauren), Jeremy Foley (Graham), Elizabeth Hoffman (Ruth), Charles Hallahan (Paul), Grant Heslov (Greg), Peter Jason (Norman), Lee Garlington (Jane).
Dante’s Peak starts off with some character background that is a good taste of things to come and actually helps build tension from the start. We know a volcano is going to erupt, we just don’t know when or what the impact will be. From there the film relaxes for a bit with character and setting development before the story starts moving again. After the volcano erupts the action takes off and the remainder of the film alternates between extreme action and suspense complete with a happily ever after ending.
Acting was mediocre here with Brosnan being over the top with his delivery in more than a few scenes. Hamilton was marginally better and almost felt believable at times. The remainder of the supporting cast felt lukewarm though Jason had a few sparks.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were decent and the film apparently had a decent budget. Effects, both physical and CGI, were fairly well done considering the size of effects necessary. Stuntwork, such as a truck driving through lava, were well done and fun. Dialogue was decent, as were sound and soundtrack.
Overall Dante’s Peak is a fairly well done disaster thriller that may not please everyone entirely, but should have a bit of something for everyone.
With some mildly disturbing disaster scenes and gore, this should be fine for teens and above.
Dante’s Peak is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
