Captain Jack is is back again, this time tangling with Black Beard and his beautiful daughter, Angelica. This time on a search for the Fountain of Youth, Jack pairs up with Angelica in a race against his old nemesis Barbossa. But is it love driving Jack, a sense of adventure, or the possibility of finding his pride, The Black Pearl.
Johnny Depp (Jack), Penelope Cruz (Angelica), Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa), Ian McShane (Blackbeard), Kevin McNally (Gibbs), Sam Claflin (Philip), Astrid Berges-Frisbey (Syrena), Stephen Graham (Scrum).
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides begins by explaining why this film really doesn’t have much to do with other entries in the franchise. From there we are back in the same, comfortable spot we have seen before with Jack launching into a ridiculous adventure by mistake. Avoiding death at every turn, inserting comedy when possible, and finding love along the way Jack seems to always come out with what he wants in the end.
Acting, as usual, was pretty good here. Depp delivered his by now trademark performance as pirate Jack. Cruz was an interesting addition and did well but felt like she didn’t quite fit. Rush and McNally did well as always while McShane did nicely in his role. Berges-Frisbey also added a nice dimension to things.
Camera work, sets, and background are about what we have come to expect from the franchise with interesting attention to detail and clear camera work. Effects were both CGI and physical and fairly well done. The mermaid scenes in particular were nicely done. Dialogue was campy and corny at time as always, while sound and soundtrack were well done.
Overall Priates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a good entry in the series though energy feels slightly lacking. Serious franchise fans will enjoy this one a lot as may those new to the series.
Including violence, intense action, mildly disturbing images, sensuality and innuendo, this should be fine for preens and above.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
