On a mission from Earth to intercept a starship launched centuries ago by a civilization of Ancients, the team is forced to evacuate their ship and board the alien craft to survive. Now trapped on a ship over which they have no control the team works to gain control while visiting strange planets for survival supplies via Stargate’s.
Robert Carlyle (Rush), Louis Ferreira (Young), Brian Smith (Scott), Elyse Levesque (Chloe), David Blue (Eli), Alaina Huffman (TJ), Jamil Smith (Greer), Peter Kelamis (Brody), Patrick Gilmore (Volker), Jennifer Spence (Park), Ming-Na (Camile Wray), Lou Diamond Phillips (Telford), Julia Benson (James).
Stargate SGU doesn’t spend much time getting the crew onto the alien craft which is when the interesting stuff starts to happen. The group quickly figures out how some of the ship functions, like dialing a Stargate or dealing with environmental issues, but they just can’t seem to steer the ship. As the first couple of seasons progress character development is continual, along with the interesting adventures and problems. Before long there is a lot of drama to go along with the sci-fi. The epitomal antagonist, Dr. Rush, turns into the character we love to hate, while others we just love.
Acting was pretty good with most of the cast doing well. The main characters were played by Carlyle, Ferreira, Smith, Levesque, Blue, Huffman, Jamil Smith, and Phillips and all did quite well. Blue matured nicely during the first two seasons and was particularly enjoyable. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid, if a bit green at times.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all nicely done including a heavy reliance on CGI. Effects, both physical and CGI, were well done with a quality feel. Dialogue was good and supported the film throughout. Sound and soundtrack were also of good quality.
Overall Stargate Universe is a fairly well done sci-fi series with a good variety of both sci-fi fantasy and dramatic plot lines. Coming into the series in the middle will be difficult as there is a timeline continuation throughout the series, with episodes building on one another.
With some sci-fi and regular violence, sexuality, and mild nudity this should be fine for teens and above.
Stargate Universe SGU: Seasons 1-2 is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
