When a young doctor finds a Brooklyn loft for an incredible bargain she jumps at the chance. Before long though she finds out why it was such a good deal as she realizes she isn’t alone in her new home. As her landlord’s obsession grows, finding at way out of her new home may be harder than she ever expected.
Hilary Swank (Dr. Juliet Devereau), Jeffrey Morgan (Max), Lee Pace (Jack), Christopher Lee (August), Aunjanue Ellis (Sydney), Sean Rosales (Carlos), Deborah Martinez (Mrs. Portes), Nana Visitor (Real Estate Agent).
The Resident begins a bit slowly with plenty of character and setting buildup before things start to get really interesting. Once Juliet begins to suspect what is happening the pace picks up and the story takes a decidedly creepy twist. From there things disintegrate a bit as Juliet, despite realizing someone is in her home, doesn’t seem to take the threat very seriously. In the end she gets her satisfaction, and some of ours, but the finish just doesn’t look genuine.
Acting was mediocre with Swank showing sparkles of emotion only intermittently. She felt slightly miscast as an object of obsessive affection and hardly fit well with Morgan. Morgan was okay but also lacked energy through much of the film and didn’t quite pull off the creepy vibe that was needed. The remainder of the supporting cast was pretty good.
Camera work was okay though a lot of dark scenes made things challenging. Sets were solid but so tight at times impact was lost. Backgrounds were decent. Dialogue was good, as were sound and soundtrack. Physical effects were nicely done, particularly at the end of the film.
Overall The Resident is a decent, mid-level Thriller that many new to the genre, or who like things on the mild side, will enjoy. Those who prefer a heavy does of suspense or emotion may find this one lacking.
With graphic violence, foul language, sexuality, nudity, and adult situations save this for the oldest teens and above.
The Resident is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
