Lindsi Glenn held Abilene Christian to five hits while Midwestern State tagged Lone Star Conference ERA leader Peyton Mosley for five runs in three innings on Friday. The result was a 5-2 MSU victory, kicking off the Mustangs final regular season series of 2012 at Mustangs Park.
Glenn held the Wildcats scoreless through four and a third innings, finally surrendering two unearned runs in the fifth after a fielding error. Glenn matched her season high of five strikeouts in the game as she improved to 19-12 on the season.
Kim Jerrick and Elena Bennett paced the MSU offense with the only multiple hit games for the Mustangs. The one and two hitters in the lineup respectively both went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jerrick added a double to her total, with Bennett adding a key stolen base.
Junior Courtney Bingham drove in what would be the game winning run in the bottom of the third, following Bennett’s single and stolen base with a double to right. Bingham’s 49th double of her career not only drove in the Mustangs third run but tied her own single season school record for doubles in a season set in 2010.
Mosley got off to a rough start in the circle for ACU, then got rocked in the third inning as she gave up a total of four earned runs on six hits in three innings. Mosley struck out one and walked two in the game as she fell to 11-7 on the season.
Keanna Winkfield turned in the only multi hit game for the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Third baseman Courtney Flanary drove in both of ACU’s runs.
MSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Christina Roosmalen delivered a single up the middle with runners on second and third. Both Bingham and Jerrick came in to score on the play.
Abilene Christian threatened in the top of the third, leading off the inning with back-to-back singles from Brianna Fowlkes and Winkfield. Glenn shut things down with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to end the inning, leading to the bottom of the third when MSU chased Mosely.
With MSU up 3-0 after Bingham’s double and an error allowing the runner to reach third, Mallory Mooney added to her career RBI record with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
After a walk was issued to Roosmalen and the first out of the inning, errors continued to hurt the Wildcats. A single to right by Nicki Duff turned into a run when a throwing error brought Roosmalen in to score and let Duff get all the way around to third.
Mosley escaped the inning with no further damage, but left the game in favor of Caitlyn Crain in the fourth. Crain failed to record a strikeout, but also issued no walks and allowed only a Jerrick double as she held MSU scoreless the rest of the way.
ACU scored their only two runs in the top of the fifth. A one out single by Winkfield and an error on a Madison Buckley ground ball put runners on first and second. A ground out by Sara Vaughn moved both runners up 60 feet for Flanary.
Both Glenn and Crain tossed three up, three down innings the rest of the way to end the game.
Midwestern State improved to 24-23 overall and 14-11 in LSC play.
Abilene Christian falls to 28-14 overall and 14-10 in conference play.
The teams wrap up the three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mustangs will finish the regular season above .500 with a split and will clinch a winning season with a sweep. In the program’s eight previous campaigns, the Mustangs have never finished with a losing record.
Saturday is also Senior Day. Prior to game one of the doubleheader, seniors Mallory Mooney and Nicki Duff will be honored by the team.
First pitch for game one is set for noon.
