While Midwestern State is struggling to get their footing, Angelo State and Tarleton State have moved to the top of the Lone Star Conference softball standings. Meanwhile, West Texas A&M’s Megan Slattery and Kim LeComte attacked the record books in an eventful second week of play in 2012.
The Mustangs battled the weather in two different states to start the season, but may have been hoping for rain by the time their trip to Canyon was finished. Losing three straight to West Texas A&M for the first time in program history, MSU came out of the weekend 12-13 overall with a 2-4 mark in LSC play.
While MSU had their share of hits in the three game series against the Lady Buffs, they came up empty when it came to leaving the yard. WTAM, on the other hand, may have set off missile warnings at nearby Amarillo Air Force Base with a total of 12 home runs in the three games. Among the round trippers three were with the bases loaded, including Slattery’s NCAA Division II record breaking sixth career grand slam, and a walk off by LeComte in game three.
LeComte’s walk off was her second home run of the game. The first, a two run shot in the fifth inning, marked the senior’s 255th career hit. That made the Boerne, Texas native the Lady Buffs’ all-time hit leader. The record breaking hit helped LeComte take LSC Co-Hitter of the Week honors.
Midwestern State has another tough meal on their plate as they travel to San Angelo this weekend to face the 23-3 Angelo State Rambelles. At 6-0 in LSC play, Angelo State shares the top of the conference standings with Tarleton State.’
The preseason favorite to win the conference, the Rambelles are riding an 11 game winning streak, most recently sweeping Eastern New Mexico in a three game series. Powered by 91 extra base hits, the Rambelles have outscored opponents 230-94 in the first 25 games.
Carly Peters led the way in the sweep of ENMU, going 7-for-10 at the plate and hitting four home runs in the three game stretch. The San Antonio native scored eight runs, drove in 11 more, and ended the series with a 2.000 slugging percentage. Peters phenomenal weekend earned the sophomore LSC Co-Hitter of the Week honors.
(On a side note: During Saturday’s doubleheader against the Mustangs, Angelo State will be helping to raise money for Operation Gratitude by selling t-shirts and koozies. Operation Gratitude is a non-profit organization that sends care packages to service members deployed overseas, to their children at home, and to wounded warriors in military hospitals.)
While the Rambelles and Mustangs tangle in San Angelo, Tarleton State plays host to Abilene Christian in another key LSC match up. Winners in seven of their last eight games, the TexAnns come into the weekend with a 21-8 overall record.
Samantha Swanda has led the TexAnns from the circle and at the plate. The Apache, Oklahoma native has turned in an 11-2 record with a 2.05 ERA as a pitcher and a .337 average with six home runs and a team leading 28 RBIs at the plate.
Swanda tossed two complete game shutouts against Texas A&M-Kingsville last weekend, allowing seven hits and striking out 11 as she earned LSC Pitcher of the Week honors.
In other conference match ups this weekend, Incarnate Word hosts Eastern New Mexico, Texas A&M-Kingsville hosts West Texas A&M, and Texas Woman’s hosts Cameron.
