The American Heart Association has named this coming Wednesday, April 4th “National Walking Day”. Obesity and other weight related issues are becoming more and more common in our country among people, but also with our pets. Many dogs are overweight or obese and this puts them at risk for countless health problems just as it does for people.
Why not take your German Shepherd Dog out with the family on April 4th and go for a walk or hike along one of the Akron area’s Metro Parks trails. We are fortunate to have the Metro Parks system available for us to utilize in this area. These parks offer great trails, beautiful scenery and a wonderful environment for you, your family and your pets to get some fresh air and exercise.
You can also use this search on the Start Walking Now website to help find other trials in the Akron area.
Remember, it is just as important for your dog to maintain a healthy weight as it is for you. Walking is a great activity that you can do with your dog. You will both enjoy getting out of the house and stretching your legs. It will also benefit you both in regards to weight loss and overall health. There are many other benefits to walking your dog such as aiding in his training, providing an outlet for his energy and giving him physical/mental stimulation.
Remember to always keep your GSD safe on a leash and under control at all times. Every time you take your German Shepherd out in public you are representing the whole breed.
