New York City can be summed up in one word. Incredible. The sights, the sounds, the people, most of the smells, and the pure energy that is the fuel of the city. There are few negative bones someone can find in New York’s body. If you have never afforded yourself the gift of visiting New York, it might be hard to understand a few things about your friends living in New York City. Also, there’s a few mannerisms I noticed on my trip to New York that broke the stereotypes and misconceptions the terrific people of New York have unmeritably been hit with in the past. In no particular order of importance, these are some things you may want to consider about New Yorkers.
1. People living in the city are ‘too good’ to answer calls from their friends outside of the city.
-The reason: A vast majority of the people that live in the city use the subway as their primary mode of transportation. And on the subway, depending on where you’re headed, that can eat up a better part of an hour each way. Cell service is mostly non-existent underground and doesn’t rebound until the rider surfaces. So if you’ve called your friend living in New York three times in a row and got no answer, try to be understanding. They (probably) aren’t ignoring you.
2. New York moves too fast.
-The reason: Once you’ve hopped off at your subway stop, you still have to hoof it over to your stated destination. Up stairs at that. And the slower you walk, naturally, the longer it takes. So there is absolutely no need to lolligag. Hence, why people think New York moves at the speed of light. More so, it moves at the speed of life. We are industrious people by nature. New York gets that and moves the way we were intended to move. At our top speed.
3. The never sleeps…It powernaps.
-The reason: Public transportation is a beautiful thing. For so many reasons. But the best reason of all…to get more rest. It’s like post-apartment departure snooze button. As long as you can manage to wake up before your stop or get a seat, you’re golden. You have about 25-30 minutes from 181st street to the 50th street stop for a commute in the morning. No reason to not take advantage. The city seems to survive on this. Just one more way New Yorkers win at life.
4. New Yorkers tend to dress warmer than it is.
-The reason: When you live in New York, after you leave your apartment in the morning, that’s it. Grab your gear for the day. If you suspect the temperature might drop. Prepare for it. The worst thing is to get caught without your coat or scarf when you need it the most. So you definitely don’t want to be ‘that person.’ This goes for anything you need. Umbrella included.
5. New Yorkers are always so good at what they do.
-The reason: The dense population of the city provides some of…wait…the toughest competition in the world. Not just with performing arts. Everything. There is someone in the city that will take your self-issued crown if you don’t deserve it, for everything under the sun. The bar for success is so high, no one is sure where it is yet. For now, New Yorkers will just settle for the sky as their target and they are all aiming for it. The city has the resources as well to compliment the raw talent that the New York provides. You have to play with the best to be the best. And the best are in New York City.
The people of New York are a special breed. Some transplants and some implants, but everyone in New York rocks out at whatever they do. The people that I met were great and were so inviting. It was amazing. The city is not for everyone. It’s for the greatest. Enjoy.
