PITTSBURGH, PA. – All that was stated durng Steeler coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert’s press-conference, is that the team looked at 750 players, whittled it down to 150 and should know who they are taking with the 24th pick when it comes around.
“As I said many times, you can’t miss on one, two or three. Those are premium picks,” Kevin Colbert said. “You shouldn’t miss on a first-rounder. To me that is a given. The two and three, if you miss on one of those, it sets you back, and you’d better hope that you got lucky in a later round to compensate for that.
“So the higher the pick, the better chance of him being an impact player, that to me is a given. If you are picking 24th, then you should have 24 guys evaluated correctly. If we didn’t and, you know, we miss like everyone else has — but again, we are going to keep score by where we stand at the end of the year.”
NFL Network Analyst Mike Mayock
Mayock says the Steelers are one of the best drafting teams in the league, and doesn’t think the first pick is necessarily as important as the entire draft.
“Like any team that builds from the draft, it puts more pressure on the entre draft,” Mayock said in a pre draft conference call. “Pittsburgh just needs to rebuild that offensive line, because your starting to see some of those former first round guys on defense, like ( Ziggy) Hood and Cameron ( Heyward) come on.”
Ed Bouchette Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Bouchette beleives the team will be looking at five players, but seems to agree with most prognasticators that the Steelers will take Dont’a Hightower if he is still on the board.
“If the Steelers don’t grab him, the Patriots will be drooling at the thought of it.”
Mike Bires Beaver County Times
Bires feels that while the Steelers need help on the offensive line, they will go with shoring up the defensive unit, and Hightower, if he is there will be the man.
“How can the Steelers pass up a talent like Hightower, who, by the way, doesn’t have any character flaws?
It says here that they won’t.
P.S. — Here’s one more reason why the Steelers should take Hightower in the first round. If the Steelers pass on Hightower, the archrival Baltimore Ravens may take him with the 29th overall pick.”
Scott Brown Tribune Review
Suprise, Surpise, Surprise…it’s Hightower.
“If his knee checked out medically and another team hasn’t taken him earlier, Hightower is the pick for the Steelers.”
Robert Bryant – NFLDRAFTDOG
Bryant seems to think the Steelers could take one of the recievers, but went with the safe bet, that the Steelers will pursue a linebacker.
“With Hines Ward’s retirement, receiver is also an option, but ILB James Farrior was let go in the off-season, so the Steelers need another inside backer. Hightower has the size that the Steelers like.
The consensus says its going to be Hightower. If he is on the board, he is a cant miss player with no character flaws and could take over James Farriors slot sooner than later.
But, the Steelers always seem to do the unexpected. Colbert did not rule out trading up or down or down for a player they may be interested in. There are a number of offensive lineman that the team could use as anchors for years including Cordy Glenn, a guard/tackle from Georgia, and Kevin Zeitler, a guard from Wisconsin.
That’s why were going with Dontari Poe, the defensive lineman from Memphis. Poe has played in a 4-3 defense, but has drawn many reviews as being the next Haloti Ngata,of Baltimore.
