When the guys at Surf City Nissan in Huntington Beach were asked if the Nissan GT-R is the fastest quarter mile car straight off the lot big grins came across their faces as they said : “Yeah, that’s the car”.
MotorTrend set up an experimental 1/4 mile drag race of the top 11 driver cars to answer a common watercooler argument. What is the fastest quarter mile car straight off the dealer’s lot?
Here are the 11 cars used in the experiment: BMW 1-series M, Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Chevy Corvette Z06, Ferrari 458 Italia, Nissan GT-R, Audi R8 GT, Mercedes-Benz SLS-AMG, Lexus LFA, Porsche Cayman R and the Lotus Evora S.
The results came out like this: Nissan GT-R, Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8 GT, Mercedes-Benz SLS-AMG, Lexus LFA, Corvette, Porsche 911, Mustang, Porsche Cayman, BMW 1-series M, Lotus Evora.
The GT-R got the fastest lap time for a production car at Nurburgring in 2007 and has been continuously beating its own record up to 2010 when it raced its 2012 model. Every GT-R gets 9 track laps at Tochigi before hand polishing and delivery.
The GT-R, also nicknamed the Skyline, is engineered to race and to win. A 3.8L twin turbo aluminum V6 engine handcrafted by master technicians has a top speed of 196 if the speed limiter is removed. Rumor is that the speed limiter automatically turns off when the GPS reaches a designated racetrack. Still, it will go up to 112 mph without it.
Its engine effiency has gained it the title of an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle. City mpg is 16 and highway mpg is 23.
The GT-R can be put in Normal, R and S modes.
R mode allows for quick, as in 0.2 second, shifts and 90% torque in the first and second gears. The vehicle will launch and Edmunds reports a 11.2 sec quarter mile in R-mode. The vehicle dynamics control (VDC) threshold is raised in R-mode.That means instead of braking wheels it will send more power to them when it senses the vehicle in under or oversteering.
The all wheel drive VDC allows for 100% of the torque to the rear wheels and 50% to the front so when turning it will feel like a RWD car.
S mode has Save, comfort and Off mode. Off disables the VDC system which is good for when you are stuck in mud or snow since it is an AWD car. Comfort mode allows a looser suspension set-up and save mode makes shifting slower and smoother.
Padde shifters and push button start allow for quick a start and shifts and 6 gears with a dual clutch transmission gets it to its to full speed faster than anything on the road. Dual clutches means the odd gears are on one clutch and the even gears are on the other just waiting to shift.
Engineers designed the car to be balanced in motion instead of when it is static like most manufacturers. Engine centering, rear mounted transaxle balance most of the weight. Hood scoops, grille shape, fender vents, undercarriage panels and the spoiler are designed for minimum drag and maximum engine and brake cooling. Aluminum, carbon fiber and ultra high strength steel parts makes it light.
Brakes are floating caliper Brembos machined from one piece. Brakes are 6 piston front and 4 piston rear for extreme clamping power.
