Lafayette Brewing Company has combined two things that many people love: beer and coffee. This occurred through a couple of local avenues. Lafayette Brewing Company obtained Electric Chair espresso beans from their uptown neighbors, K. Dee’s coffee. The next local angle comes from a West Lafayette resident who developed a dry-hopping machine that is adaptable to filter beer through coffee beans. This machine, if used exclusively for beer, is called a ‘hop-back.’ However, due to it’s re-purpose, it became known as the ‘java rocket.’ This name seems to suit the ingredients of the resulting drink. Since it wasn’t fitted to commercial standards, it was enhanced even further, becoming what Lafayette Brewing Company calls the ‘java torpedo,’ again sounding as aggresive as the finished product.
That product is known as ‘Electric Chair Java Stout.’ It is LBC’s own Black Angus Oatmeal Stout filtered through the electric chair espresso beans. The coffee aroma is what a patron will most likely notice first, even more than the obvious dark color this ‘dual brew’ will exude. Both coffee and beer are commonly seen as ‘pick-me-ups’ for many people. If that is true in the physical sense, coffee and beer mixed together may very well make someone be able to walk on thin air, or at least feel like that is exactly what’s happening.
Lafayette Brewing Company has had much success with this new style of brewing, and is moving closer to featuring a coffee beer of some kind all year round. If you missed Electric Chair, another inception of the same style is likely just around the corner.
