This past week, President Barack Obama teamed up with talk show host and comedian Jimmy Fallon to do a slow jam. While Obama spent time at the University of Colorado to talk to a college crowd and to record the Fallon show, he visited a bar and had his picture taken with Madalyn Starkey – a new Twitter and Internet sensation.

Starkey became an Internet sensation when she posed with the president of the United States for a picture inside the bar, and the picture went viral. Rather than striking a pose she would be proud to show her children and grandchildren one day, she made a face and ‘pulled-an-Arizona Governor Brewer’ on him. She pointed at him – but in a rather goofy way, instead of confrontationally as Governor Jan Brewer did months ago at an Arizona airport.
Beyond the Fallon slow jam comedy routine and posing for pictures with college kids, the president was seen camping-it-up at the Easter egg roll on the White House lawn a few weeks ago. Much like the Starkey photo, some of those photos were quite weird, too.
The question is: Why is President Obama putting himself in these situations?
Does he think that putting himself in potentially wacky or goofy situations will help his image? Beyond that, are these the times that Obama should be entertaining instead of leading the nation to a better economy and job market?
Many would probably respond with a resounding ‘no.’
Shortly after the Fallon show aired, the Republican National Committee released an attack video called The Tale of Two Leaders. Naturally, it is pro-Romney, and it makes Romney look like the serious leader for these serious times in America.
These are the times when the president ought to be in Washington, D.C. – working – and at least giving Americans the impression that he’s trying to improve this nation.
While Obama’s effort to get Congress to do something about college loan rates is important, it does not justify the president staying several days on the road to talk to college students on college campuses – and to rub elbows and grab photo ops with them like he’s some sort of rock star in the bars.
Obama needs to remember that the 2012 campaign is going to be much different than 2008. In 2008, he could run on meaningless slogans like ‘Hope and Change.’ After four years in the White House, however, he is expected to run on his record. So he better start improving it fast.
The way Obama has been acting lately, one might even think that he has forgotten that he needs to win an election in about 7 months – or he’ll be headed back to Chicago in defeat.
And if you’ve read the crime pages lately, Chicago isn’t a very good place to be right now. But crime in Chicago and elsewhere is another issue – which Obama has ignored.
