The Desert Dreams Writers’ Conference will be held at the Chaparral Suites Hotel, 5001 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale on April 27–29. Keynote speakers will be Martha Alderson, aka the Plot Whisperer, and New York Times best-selling authors Allison Brennan and Bob Mayer.
Martha Alderson, who has dedicated herself to teaching the structure of plot, will speak on “Character, Action and Theme Create Plot” and “Plot and the Transformational Power of the Universal Story.”
Bob Mayer, author of more than 50 books, will present “Write It Forward,” which teaches writers how to become successful authors in the new age of publishing.
Allison Brennan, author of 17 novels, will explore the world of romantic suspense and thrillers through her topic, “Thrills & Chills: Writing Romantic Suspense and Thrillers.”
The conference will give writers a chance to pitch their manuscripts to big-name editors and agents on hand to give advice and present workshops. These include editors and senior editors from Saint Martin’s Press, Five Star, and Harlequin, and agents from The Herman Agency, Three Seas Literary, Waxman Literary, Spencerhill Associates Limited, McIntosh and Otis, Inc., and Cherry Weiner Literary. In addition, the founder of the Indie Book Collective will be available to meet with writers interested in independent publishing. All conference attendees may make one-on-one appointments with an agent or editor of their choice for free. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Elise Goitia of Tempe has plans to attend the conference. “I have written two books and am working on a third in my young adult series. I chose Desert Dreams because I’ve heard so many good things about it. With the conference’s help, I hope to get a three-book publishing deal.”
On Saturday, April 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Desert Dreams will offer a book signing open to the public in the Chaparral Suites ballroom. Local and national best-selling authors will be available to sign their books. Patricia L. Brooks, founder/president of the Scottsdale Society of Women Writers, will feature her book Gifts of Sisterhood. Another SSWW member, Marilyn Frazer, also plans to feature her books.
Desert Dreams is hosted by Desert Rose, a local Arizona chapter of Romance Writers of America.
