The Olympics… The World Series… The Payoffs…
Those are all places to be for the athletes in each of those particular sports. Reaching those final rounds is exciting and grueling hard work. Every effort is made to make it through each round. Hours of videos of the competition are studied, plays are written and skills are perfected through long hours or technique training and practice. So what happened to you? Not an athlete? It does not matter! You should want to make it to the final rounds to win the job just as much as an athlete wants to win the trophy.
So how do you prepare?
Get a resume ready and have it handy! Have it critiqued by friends and industry professionals to make sure that it reflects what you want it to reflect. Nothing works better that a well-organized and well written resume.
Research the company! Learn about the organizations you want to be part of. What are their values, mission and vision? What is their culture like? What is it really like to work there? Ask around; use your connections to learn information on what exactly they are looking for. Remember: You don’t want to be on a losing team.
Check out the competition! See what the statistics are on the positions you are applying for. Whether you are using CareerBuilder, Monster or LinkedIn, pay attention to the date the position was posted and the amount of people that have applied. Athletes review video to learn about their competition so they are prepared to play the game to win. You should do that too!!
Give it your all! Once you are in the final rounds don’t get cocky, comfortable or too confident that you got the job. Some of the greatest upsets in sports history have come about when players get that way. Don’t lose to yourself. Practice, rehearse your answers and questions, memorize your resume and learn the company and go into the interview with an attitude of “being in it to win it.”
Whether you are in the application stage, the interview round or waiting on the hiring decision, think of it as a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but if you don’t apply you are not playing the game.
Don’t get discouraged and keep up the job search because when you land that job you’ve wanted and searched for, you become the Gold Medalist, the World Series Champion or the Playoff Winner. Your fans will celebrate, your enemies will complain and you will gloat on your win.
Want to be a success? Ready, Set, Go! Now, get in the game!
