It was an exciting morning at Freehold Raceway Mall. Today was the grand opening of the Monmouth County SPCA “Homeward Bound Adoption Center.” Visitors were gathered at the adoption center entrance before 10 a.m. patiently waiting for the celebration to begin.
Promptly at 10 a.m., Jerry Rosenthal, acting executive director of the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA), delivered his opening remarks and performed the official ribbon cutting. Spectators rushed into the adoption center, anxious to see the many adoptable puppies and kittens on view and talk with the shelter personnel.
It took only 20 minutes for someone to step forward and choose an adorable Sato puppy to call their own.
“This puppy was rescued from Puerto Rico, and Sato is slang for the word Mutt,” said Ellen La Torre, finance manager for the MCSPCA. “There are over 150,000 abandoned cats and dogs in Puerto Rico, and there is no spay or neuter program there. Shelters in Puerto Rico have a 97% euthanasia rate. Therefore, animals have little chance for a long life there. The MCSPCA has formed partnerships in order to rescue many of these animals and find good homes for them here.”
The store was bright and cheery, and it is a good option when looking for pet supplies, from cat scratching posts to dog toys and clothing.
A Humane Education “Read to the Dogs” session also took place in the morning. Comfortable cushions were placed on the floor so children could sit and gather around the reader and interact with the therapy dog named Lily.
