Laidback Luke’s highly anticipated North American ‘Super You & Me’ bus tour began last weekend making a stop at the Palladium in downtown Hollywood. Regarded as a legendary figure in house music, Laidback Luke continues to demonstrate superior talent furthering an already successful twenty-year career as a DJ/Producer. Last Saturday was no different as Luke partnered up with Insomniac Events and DJs Zedd, Congorock and GTA to headline his ‘Super You & Me’ party at the historic Sunset Boulevard venue. Featuring a superhero dress code and towering stage production, the event resulted in the massive success Luke hoped for brining his ‘Super You & Me’ event to LA for the first time.
Stepping into the DJ booth at 10pm, Congrorock played a flawless ninety-minute set. Bridging the gap between an opening and headlining DJ, Congrorock’s mix had a milder vibe than his fans are accustomed to. However, he played all of his signature tracks throughout the night, resulting in an energized and rowdy crowd ready for the next act. Hailing from Germany, Anton Zaslavski’s – better known as Zedd – career has taken off in the last twelve months. Known for high-octane electro productions and amazing remixes, Zedd’s electrifying house melodies can be heard in sets by some of the biggest DJs in the world. His tracks ‘Shave It,’ ‘Slam The Door’ and his remix of the Zelda theme song are all dance music staples. Cloaked from head-to-toe as Superman the young German delivered heavy bass and spiraling riffs, confirming his superstar status. Highlighted by 4,000 partiers dressed in superhero costumes singing ‘Save The World’ by Swedish House Mafia, Zedd’s set had the crowd going nuts from start to finish.
Zedd’s closing mix: 12:50 – 1:00 AM:
- Generation 303 – Nicky Romero
- F****n Down – Tristan Garner, Gregori Klosman
- Walking Alone (acapella) – Dirty South vs. Nillionaire – Alesso
- Warp 1.9 – Bloody Beetroots, Steve Aoki
- Antidote (Tommy Trash Remix) – Swedish House Mafia, Knife Party
- Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Zedd Remix) – Skrillex
As a veteran electronic DJ, Laidback Luke has an enormous skill set. Experienced in every conceivable dance genre, Saturday’s set was anything but ‘laidback’ as he demonstrated his unique ability to create a performance unlike any other. Donned in all black as Spiderman’s alter-ego, Luke combined electronic-dance hits new and old creating the party of a lifetime. Take for instance, Chuckie’s edit between Benny Benassi’s electro classic ‘Satisfaction’ and today’s chart-topping rap song ‘Ni**as in Paris.’ Or the mix of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis with ‘Tung!’ by Deniz Koyu and ‘Spaceman’ by Hardwell. Combining handfuls of different productions, Luke showcased his unworldly talent creating great tracks that had the sold-out Los Angeles crowd going wild. Standing at the turntables high above the frenzy of superhero get-ups and giant foam fingers, Luke frequently threw his signature ‘double L’ hand gestures in the air forcing the crowd to do the same. With the help of Insomniac’s continued event perfection, the Palladium was transformed into a sea of people with no worries or complaints. Only one thing resonated throughout the spacious venue – the thumping bass and unforgettable music of Laidback Luke.
