The Stockton Thunder announced Thursday (Mar. 29) that the team has signed rookie forward Greg Squires, who recently completed his collegiate hockey career at Western Michigan University.
Squires, 23, is expected to join the Thunder in time for the team’s final two regular-season games, which will be played on Friday and Saturday nights against the Idaho Steelheads in Boise, ID.
Squires played four seasons at Western Michigan and amassed 100 points (26 goals, 74 assists) and 109 penalty minutes in 160 career games. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound right wing collected eight goals and 11 assists in 41 games during his senior season.
“In talks with the coaching staff at Western Michigan, the one thing that stood out about Greg is that he plays with pace,” Thunder Coach Matt Thomas said in a statement issued by the team. “He fits in well with our high-tempo style, and we add a threat with his speed and ability to make plays. He’s a player with great potential to play at the higher levels and will be a great fit for us in the post-season.”
As expected, the Thunder also announced on Thursday that goalie Thomas Heemskerk has been recalled by the Worcester (Mass.) Sharks of the American Hockey League. Heemskerk is 13-12-0 with a goals-against average of 3.27 and a save percentage of .893 in 25 appearances with Stockton this season.
The Thunder enters the final weekend of the regular season in fifth place in the ECHL’s Western Conference and will begin competition in the Kelly Cup playoffs next week. Playoff dates will be announced when the team’s final seeding and first-round opponent are finalized this weekend.
Per club policy, terms of the contract signed by Squires were not disclosed.
