Dean and Loretta Nelson of Allenhurst, NJ will be running in the sold out Asbury Park Half Marathon on Saturday, April 21, 2012. The race is part of RunAPalooza which is a benefit for Special Olympics New Jersey and also includes the Jersey Shore Relay Marathon. The husband and wife have been training since January with a group of 60 plus runners every Saturday starting from Convention Hall in Asbury Park.
For Dean it is an obsession of a healthy lifestyle that he puts into practice every day with his Dean’s Natural Food Markets. The food stores with his name are located in Ocean Township, Shrewsbury and a new location to be opening soon in Basking Ridge. The stores carry a full line of healthy foods to include an extensive selection of organic produce, groceries & bulk foods, a dedicated gluten-free and allergy-friendly foods section; the famous Dean’s organic juice and smoothie bar and a Fresh Foods department, which offers a wide selection of grab-n-go organic entrees, sides, sandwiches, vegan
salad bar and more.
The store boasts on-staff nutritionists that always available to answer any questions about vitamins, supplements, homeopathic remedies and health and beauty products.
Dean himself started out 20 years ago working in a health food store and then branched out on his own opening his first store in Ocean Township on Rt 35 some 17 years ago in 1995. The store proved popular and soon he opened a second location a few miles north in Shrewsbury on Broad Street there. He is enthusiastic about opening his third store in Basking Ridge.
In the half marathon training group Dean is in the “A” Group and is frequently out front with the lead pack. Dean often brings some “healthy” snacks to share after the run with the group.
Dean has been a Vegan – a non-meat, nondairy diet – now for some 20 years. He generally eats his food in the natural raw state. According to Dean he is “contemplating his pre-race meal that will provide the essential nutrients and nourishment to optimize his performance in the race.”
After completing the half marathon Dean has his eyes set on completing his first marathon in the fall.
Over 3000 runners will be participating in this year’s RunAPalooza in Asbury Park. The event is sold out but volunteers are welcome. Volunteer Info is on the RunAPalooza Web Site.
