No time to stop at a local fancy chocolate shop for the experience? The allure of a menagerie of beautifully displayed and adorned counter tops, gorgeous boxes of chocolate everywhere and really good lighting? A recent quick grab of a box of Russell Stover’s chocolate assortment was satisfying, convenient and a choice I often forget about. Where and how much? A Sacramento area Walmart for just over five bucks for 21 pieces of chocolate. Its where everyone goes or must go for something these days. Right? Well, the allure of good chocolate sometimes defies the exotic place you’ll find it.
There’re just boxes of it on a shelf like every other. Yet, to my surprise, the elongated box; a Stover’s standard and the standard mark of the chocolate brown ribbon printed on the smooth satiny white box is pleasing.
I sort of felt like Forrest Gump was right, “life is like a box of Chocolates… you never know what you’re gonna get.”
Not as fresh or creamy as what you’ll probably find at a specialty shop due to its inevitable longer shelf life, the chocolates truly felt like a gift to myself. Isn’t this what chocolate is all about? Treating one’s self to something special or giving the gift to someone else?
Inside the proudly made in America box as noted on the back of the box, are old-fashioned chocolate chews that are handcrafted in small batches. What does this means? The chocolate crafters at Stover blends the ingredients of fruit, butter and sweet cream by hand in small batches. Then the ingredients are put into a copper pot and blended again with kitchen mixers. The essential use of copper or aluminum pots to make chocolate, as any avid chocolate maker knows, has been an industry standard for companies that make the confection and home chefs for over a hundred years.
Stover, making chocolate since 1923, the made in America chocolate still holds the title as America’s favorite chocolate store that’s now online. The company also produces the Whitman and Pangburn’s chocolate brands offering a box of chocolate as originated by the company and a specialty chocolate of caramel and pecans. The Whitman brand is now also promoting a weight-watchers chocolate.
More than any other feature of the Stover’s chocolate, is that you can get it at nearly every large retailer and you can get it easily– satisfaction guaranteed when a box of chocolates is needed in a hurry for a special day, occasion or just hanging out with a book on a Sunday morning. Its an old-fashioned standard that also uses 100% recycled paperboard to house its chocolate.
