Today will go down in history as the day that SAG and AFTRA joined together to create one union, one voice. A total of 87% of the AFTRA community voted yes and 82% of the SAG group voted yes. The applause and reaction when this announcement was made was deafening.
This is now a united group in its commitment towards all the things that its members depend on. In a series of comments numerous quotes resounded, such as “in a single day our future has become bright.”
A strong marketing effort supported this cause with meetings to educate all members and encourage them to get out to vote. The whole marketing effort was very transparent allowing every member to voice their concerns and get answers. Never did they try to hide from the difficult questions. In fact those questions were welcomed.
This was the culmination of two years of effort. It was the collective effort that was the reason that this happened and the two organizations united as one.
People, like me, who were members of one union, are automatically members of SAGAFTRA, which I am extremely excited about.
SAGAFTRA is going to give the united organization the strength and voice they need to keep its members working, something that has become a real issue with all the non-union projects now available to actors.
There was also a huge group of volunteers who supported the effort and encouraged a “yes” vote. The goal being that one union builds strength.
Today is a very big day for those who can now say they are SAGAFTRA members.
