Today, I was able to witness a very cool event. Siegfried and Roy introduced the Amur Tiger cub Semipostal stamp for the United States Postal Service. A Semipostal stamp is a stamp that exceeds the cost of normal postage. The proceeds from this stamp will support the conservation efforts directed at specific engendered species.
The Amur Tiger cub stamp, and other stamps in the collection titled “Save Vanishing Species,” will benefit Tigers as well as African and Asian Elephants, Rhinos, Great Apes, and Marine Turtles.
Franz Kallao, who is the vice president of hotel operations for The Mirage Hotel and Casino, opened up the press conference by thanking everyone and welcoming them to Siegried and Roy’s Secret Garden. After a short introduction, he turned the microphone over to Craig Colton.
Craig Colton is the Postmaster of Las Vegas. He explained what a Semipostal stamp is, and gave a short prepared speech. After he finished up, he handed the microphone to Siegfried and Roy.
I can’t express how exciting it was to hear the great Siegfried and Roy talk about their efforts to save tigers for over 20 years. Siegfried talked about how they helped save the white tigers from extinction. Meanwhile, the white tigers playing in the habitat behind the press area captivated the crowd.
The crowd cheered as Siegfried and Roy put the larger than life Amur Tiger cub stamp on the oversized envelope.
I can’t imagine a better spot to introduce the stamp. The backdrop for the introduction to this stamp was none other than Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, located at the Mirage Hotel and Casino.
The Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat is home to white lions, white tigers, panthers, leopards and a family of Bottlenose Dolphins. Most of these animals are endangered.
In looking at these majestic creatures, you can’t help but understand why Siegfried and Roy are so passionate about saving them. I wouldn’t know how to express how awesome it is to see a White Lion, a creature I didn’t know existed until moving to Las Vegas.
Siegfried and Roy invited many of the employees’ children to be part of this historical event. The Secret Garden is teaching the importance of conservation and protection, and these children get a front row seat.
The stamps are available at the gift shop inside Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden, as well as inside the Shark Reef gift shop. The stamps are also available at any United States post offices.
