Calming an over stimulated baby requires some patience. The process of putting an over stimulated baby to sleep may take as long as 45 minutes. Though usually it can be accomplished in 20 minutes. If you don’t have a D.V.R. this may be a good excuse to get one.
First, get to a place that is as dark and quiet as possible. Yes, with the baby! That means turning off the Spurs game too. Sorry. No one said there wouldn’t be sacrifices. Swaddling your baby is also highly recommended. Unaware that they possess limbs they are unable to control them. Hence, they move around unaware that they themselves are keeping themselves awake. Try falling asleep while jogging for instance.
This is a time when it is good to be a dad. Because the keys are this; shush loudly and pat firmly. The idea is to distract your baby, to get her attention. Many moms simply don’t pat firmly enough for fear of injuring her baby. Obviously don’t swat at your baby but instead give her a good, steady and firm pat. Once you have her attention she’ll likely stop crying, if only for a moment. In fact, she made open her eyes and look around, apparently having the opposite effect you desire. But stay with it. The shushing will mimic the sounds she heard in utero and give her comfort. The patting gives movement, something else she experienced inside her mommy. Both together, movement and sound, ironically, will begin to calm her down. As she settles down both shushing and patting can be gradually reduced. In time your exhausted baby will fall asleep.
But putting her down now may wake her up and you will have to start over. This is why it is important to be patient. If you stick with the process long enough for her to get into a deeper sleep she may stay asleep when you move her, or if she does awake it will be only for a moment until she falls immediately back to sleep. This will take some trial and error on your part, learning her sleep cues and when it is safe to put her down. You may not wish to put her down at all however, enjoying the quiet and beauty of a sleeping baby on your chest. In that case, enjoy it. The Spurs can wait.
