I now understand that a total of eleven students have been charged regarding the brawls at Azalea Middle School on March 20.
One student identified as Xavier Reed, H/M, DOB of 01/28/97 is being charged with Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Disorderly Conduct. Nine other students are being charged with Disorderly Conduct and one is being charged with Obstruction. A possible charge against one student for Battery on a School Employee is still pending.
All the students that were charged, with the exception of the lone student who was charged with obstruction, were transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
The student that fled from the school after the brawl was broken up has not been located as yet, but will face charges of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer at a later time. The charge of Aggravated Battery initially anticipated against one student for allegedly striking another with a combination lock is being withheld at this time pending further investigation.
I do understand that the injuries to that alleged student victim were very minor and did not require any medical treatment. The two students that were pepper sprayed during efforts to break up the fights did not require medical treatment. As for the school employee that was suffering chest pains, that issue was apparently unrelated to the brawls taking place
and it occurrence at that time was just coincidental. There is still no word on the cause of the brawls at this time, but according to supervisors on the scene they did not appear
to be interrelated.
Officers with the SPPD Youth Services Division will be working with school officials and The Pinellas County Schools Campus. Police will address the measures needed to prevent any disruptions occurring at the school in the immediate future.
