In a new study published this week in the journal Pediatrics by Dr. Gary Smith at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus, more than 93,000 emergency room visits take place every year due to children falling on stairs.
Every six minutes in the US, a child is injured on the stairs. This is significantly decreased since parents have for the most part stopped using baby walkers and switched over to stationary activity centers.
Here are some tips to stay safe on the stairs:
- Do not carry anything else if you are carrying your child down the stairs.
- Keep clutter off the steps.
- Install hand rails and use them.
- Keep stairs well lit.
- Use gates at the top and bottom of stairs whenever possible.
