One thing that makes the news most in
Oil City, Pa is how many people and
how many businesses are leaving town.
The powers that be are continuously
seeking and discussing new ways of
drawing new business and tourism into
town or how to get new people to move
here or keep our young people here once
they get out of school or college.
They discuss and try various strategies
to bring life back into Oil City; but the
town just keeps moving closer and
closer to a sure death. Why?
Well one thing may or may not be the
cause but it most assuredly is a cause.
Part of being Christian is supposed to
be lifting up, not tearing down.
In Oil City this concept has been lost
somewhere along the way.
It has become common practice with
many around Oil City when young people
state their goals for the future to tell them
Your too lazy, you won’t leave home, you
never set your mind to anything, “you don’t
know the first thing about being a Doctor,
don’t set your goals to high start with
something small like holding down a part
time job then think about being a Dr”, or
quite simply you can’t, or you’re not smart
They use excuses like we are only looking
out for him, or we know his capabilities
better than you when someone else tries to
give these young people encouragement.
If you try to explain to these friends or family
members that they should be the first ones in
line giving these young people support and
encouraging them to reach for their dreams;
they get offended and go on the attack.
They feel you’re doing these kids wrong by
encouraging them to reach high for their
dreams and by believing in them.
Evidently in Oil City no one has ever read
the story lately of The little engine who could.
Maybe they should.
The young people who manage to ignore the
negative responses to their goals usually end
up moving away to go to college and never
come back after because; face it no one wants
to live and work around people who do not
believe in them and their goals.
No one wants to be around people who’s only
goal in life seems to be to hold them down.
The ones who do not manage to escape the
negativity unfortunately end up accomplishing
just what they have been told their whole lives
that they would; Nothing.
So Oil City; You want your young people to
come back after collage, you want them to live
and work here, you want other people and
businesses to believe this is the kind of
community they want to move to.
Then you need to stop pulling your young
people down and start giving them support and
If you don’t then one day Oil City will finally
become the next Pit Hole.
You can fix up all the streets and sidewalks
real fancy all you want, and you can tear down
all the dilapidated buildings and build new ones
all you want.
But if you continue preventing and discouraging
your young people from going after their dreams;
all you’re going to have in the end is the prettiest
ghost town in history.
All you kids who keep hearing those negative
responces to your dreams; Just remember what
the Wright brothers did when everyone told them
they could not make their plane fly, and what all
we would never have accomplished today if they
had believed what every body told them.
If you tell someone they can’t long enough; they
If you believe in them enough; they will accomplish
all that they wanted and more.
