Episode 4 of “Survivor: One World” was surreal, and it all had to do with contestant Colton Cumbie. Yes, the men’s tribe made a bold decision that might come back to bite them in the rear, but the biggest takeaway from “Survivor” is the behavior of Colton, his bigotry, and his utterly ironic sense of superiority and prejudice against others.

What happened last night at Tribal Council was disgusting, but it needs to be put into proper context. It didn’t happen in a vacuum, and if you’ve watched the show since episode 1 (and I’m sure you have), you know that Colton’s behavior, both in front of his tribe and in his confessionals, virtually foreshadowed what occurred at the tail end of the show.
Colton has already called Bill “ghetto trash” (which, let’s be honest, is silly, because while Bill may be black, he fits more inside the “California surfer” stereotype than “trash” from the inner city).
- Story: Jeff Probst calls the mens’ decision a ‘dumba** move’
Colton also labeled Leif as an Oompa Loompa, while also referring to him as a midget who needs to “go back to Oz.”
And then last night, Colton took his ignorance to new levels. Despite being a gay man who surely has faced his own share of prejudice, he suggested that Bill “get a real job” (as if being a standup comedian qualifies Bill to be a welfare queen) before using the typical bigoted safety valve of “I have black people in my life.”
When pressed by Jeff Probst to identify which black people he was referring to, Colton was stumped. He then blurted out his housekeeper, as if his real life version of “The Help” somehow afforded him the opportunity to be a virtuous bigot.
Reality television is supposed to be fun, and while we love the idea of watching people we love to hate, there’s not much to love about Colton. He’s not charming. He doesn’t work hard. And he’s doesn’t necessarily appear to be strategically savvy.
Instead, he’s a younger, humorless Archie Bunker.
And at least with Archie, we laughed at his ignorance. With Colton, fans have become sickened.
If you visit the “Meet Colton” YouTube video, which was produced by CBS before the “One World” premiere, people are repulsed by what they saw last night. Here’s a little sampling (usernames have been omitted):
“Colton is a more heinous individual than Russell Hantz, and as a gay man, I am disgusted that such a person exists. He represents a minority that still fights to be considered maturely and humanly, and he sets back that cause whenever he speaks.”
“Probably one of the most disgusting human beings I have ever seen. I thought Russell was bad but this guy? He is nothing but a racist, sexist, judgmental jerk.”
“Not only did he judge and particularly insulted Bill’s personal struggles in life, but he also insulted Leif because he has dwarfism. I cannot believe people like that exist in this world. Colton, if you’re reading this right now, in the beginning I started to like you, but after last night, I have lost complete and utter respect for you, because that was completely disrespectful, and frankly you can kiss my MOTHER F****** A**!!!!!”
Yeah…those are just the ones that were capable of being published without heavy, heavy editing.
So congratulations, Colton. You’ve now gone down in “Survivor” lore as one of the most despised villains in the show’s history. And we’re only four episodes in.
Archie Bunker would be proud.
