Unless you live under a rock or do not have access to the internet, you probably have heard all about the cinnamon challenge.
In the cinnamon challenge, you take a spoonful of cinnamon and try to swallow it in 60 seconds or less, without using any liquid and without vomiting or inhaling the cinnamon.
The Cinnamon Challenge Video
People all over the country are doing this and challenging their friends and family to do it.
They are making videos to post on youtube and are making bets and dares on just who can complete this challenge with no problem.
NBA basketball players have done it, the Governer of Illinois has done it, and so have more then 30,000 others who have uploaded their videos onto youtube.
It is the funny and amusing dare that everyone of all ages is doing and loving getting a laugh at their friends failing at it and choking on the cinnamon and coughing up a brown dust cloud.
Funny? sure, but it could also be dangerous to you as well.
Cinnamon is not easy to break down, so it can get stuck in your throat and cause you to gag and/or vomit.
Doctors are saying that the cinnamon can prevent the air from reaching your lungs and you can inhale the dust, and instead of gagging and vomitting, you could choke so bad that it could affect your lungs, which could cause pneumonia or worse, cause you to choke to death.
Many schools are warning parents and teachers about the dangers of this and they are wanting them to be aware of what could happen because of this new fad.
The fad though is not really new. It has been around for a long time, but it is somehow popular again and a new generation is having fun with it. Some of the many videos on youtube are from years ago.
As with any new craze, kids are eager to try it, and whether to be cool and achieve the goal of swallowing the cinnamon without a problem or to fit in and do what their peers are asking them to do, it is increasingly popular in the schools and could really affect their health.
Illinois Governer Pat Quinn did it on air, he swallowed the cinnamon, waited, and then took some water and said, ” The will of the people. The law of the land.”
He was challenged to do it and took that dare.
Which is not that great for the kids who are looking up to him as a role model, seeing him do it is making it “okay” to them.
It has been shown on talk shows, been on the news, and radio stations all over the country are having contests to see who can do the cinnamon challenge without failing.
While it may be funny to see someone cough up a huge cinnamon cloud and gasp for water, it can be something that could affect your lungs and could end you up in the hospital.
One student ended up in the hospital for four days because of issues with his lungs after trying it.
So parents, while some of you may find this amusing and decide to try this yourself, please tell your kids not to do this, and warn them of the dangers.
Sometimes funny could hurt you.
