The Jesus Storybook Bible, by Sally Lloyd-Jones & Illustrated by Jago, Zonderkidz, 2007, Ages 4 and UP, 352 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-0310708254, $16.99
Winner of the 2007 Moonbeam Gold Medal award, 2009 NAPPA Award and 2010 Mom’s Choice Award in children’s religious category, The Jesus Storybook Bible does whisper His name as the subtitle says. However, many of the stories are not biblically accurate.
Even though JAGO’s cartoon style illustrations of animals, people and settings are colorful, invite children into the narratives, the literary license taken with paraphrasing subtly distorts story meanings.
For example in “The Terrible Lie, the third story in the book where Eve is tempted by Satan, the snake slithers up to Eve and asks, “…Does God really love you?” However, the temptation wasn’t about God’s love.
The real question of Eve’s temptation in the Garden of Eden found in Genesis 3:1 reveals it’s about obedience, not God’s love, when the snake asks, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?’”
Accounts include 21 Old Testament and 23 New Testament stories from the creation to the resurrection to John’s dream of the future heaven in the book of Revelations. While this is a good storybook, it’s not an accurate Bible storybook.
The discrepancies are subtle and can give impressionable minds the wrong message. This is a storybook written for story value instead of Bible accuracy which takes from the credibility of the stories. While stories do point to Jesus, the cartoon caricatures and creative license, particularly with the Easter resurrection story, were too lighthearted for me.

God’s Great Story of Salvation
The multiple award-winning Jesus Storybook Bible tells the Story beneath all the stories in the Bible. It takes the whole Bible to tell the Story. And at the center of the Story, there is a baby, the Child upon whom everything would depend. From Noah to Moses to King David, every story whispers his name. Jesus is like the missing piece in a puzzle—the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together.
Beautifully written and illustrated, the Jesus Storybook Bible invites children to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God’s great story of salvation—and at the center of their story too.
