Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli superstar Idan Raichel – collaboratively known as The Touré-Raichel Collective – will kick off their North American tour in the Nation’s Capital on Thursday, April 12th. The Touré-Raichel Collective brings their unique, eclectic and global sound to Washington, DC at the Hamilton for a one night only performance.
As the story is told – Vieux Farka Touré was performing at the Tel Aviv Opera House. After his performance, Idan Raichel invited Vieux to record with him the next day with Israeli bassist Yossi Fine and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane. The result of that November 2010 recording studio session is the appropriately titled “Tel Aviv Session” – a musically-organic, acoustic, spontaneous, and entirely improvised session between two of today’s most recognized global musicians.
The Tel Aviv Session is said to be an album that is reminiscent of classic albums such as “Talking Timbuktu” by Ali Farka Touré with Ry Cooder; Keith Jarrett’s “The Köln Concert”; or Vincent Segal and Ballake Sissoko’s acclaimed“Chamber Music”. The Touré-Raichel Collective consists of Israeli superstar Idan Raichel; Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré; Israeli bassist Yossi Fine; and Malian calabash player Souleymane Kane. “The Tel Aviv Session” also features guest artists: Patrick Ruffino (Bass on “Alkataou”) ; Yankale Segal (Tar on “Kfar”); Frédéric Yonnet (Harmonica on “Touré”); Cabra Casay (Vocals on “Ane Nahatka”); and Mark Eliyahu (Kamanche on “Alem”).
Individually, The Touré-Raichel Collective is an impressive group of renoun musicians. With his distinctive long dreadlocks and turban, Idan is a household name in Israel – he is an Israeli pop star and is often recognized all over the world. His internationally renowned band The Idan Raichel Project unites African, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and other multicultural flavors into an accessible global pop amalgam. Guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré is one of Africa’s premier guitarists and a member of Malian musical royalty. His father is the legendary Ali Farka Touré, one of Raichel’s main musical inspirations. Bassist Yossi Fine is the leader of Ex-Centric Sound System. He has recorded with everyone from Lou Reed to Meshell N’degeocello, was the producer on Vieux’s second album Fondo, and he is also one of Idan’s musical mentors.
This week – Tuesday, March 27th – The Touré-Raichel Collective released their first project “The Tel Aviv Session”; and starting on April 12th they will bring their amazing talents and sound to the US and Canada. Their live performances promise to embrace the natural spontaneity, as well as showcase the free-form creativity, of the original recording sessions that inspired the album. Audiences will experience firsthand the invention of sublime and transcendent music. Music that not only crosses boundaries of country, but embraces the collective spirit of culture and tradition.
