If you are a foodie and a Hunger Games fan, this cookbook is for you.
It has recipes for many of Katniss Everdeen’s favorite foods and a guide to local plants and herbs.
District 12, Katniss’ home location, has many lakes and wooded areas similar to Vermont with the same hunting, foraging and gardening opportunities.
Some call for unusual or disturbing ingredients not used in present day cooking in America, but in other parts of the world and the future they are more common.
However, many fresh vegetables are readily available from Lewis Creek Farm and lamb from Stark Hollow Farm.
Both of these are available at the Burlington Farmers Market and Burlington Winter Market.
A fun aspect is that each recipe begins with a small description relating to its inclusion in The Hunger Games.
Also, side notes called “Tips from Your Sponsor” which are helpful culinary suggestions and substitutions for more difficult to find components.
As Catching Fire, the second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, hits movie theaters, prepare some of this examiner’s top recipes from the cookbook:
Lamb Stew with Dried Plums, page 58
Prim’s “Getting By” Goat Cheese Spread, page 86
Clover-Mint Tea, page 87
Sauteed Apples with Amber Honey Whipped Cream, page 169
“May the odds be forever in your favor!”
