Get ready, Philly indie rock fans– you’ve got some tough decisions to make this week. There’s a robust roster of gigs to choose from in the days ahead and, once again, newcomer venue Union Transfer is leading the way in indie rock shows. Some indie standbys will be returning to Philly this week, and some breakout artists will make much-anticipated debuts.
First up, Georgia-based band Of Montreal will stop at Union Transfer on Monday (April 2). The psychedelic pop collective are touring in support of their latest album, the cryptically-named Paralytic Stalks. Led by exhibitionist frontman Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal is known for their trippy live shows, so this is definitely one to watch.
If you head back to Union Transfer on Tuesday (April 3), you’ll catch indie electronica group Neon Indian. The Texas natives recently announced that they’ll be heading to Coachella in a few weeks, so this is a great chance to catch them if you don’t feel like making a cross-country trek.
Going head-to-head with Neon Indian, Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men will headline the TLA for two nights– April 3 and 4. The indie folk newcomers got their break right here in Philly, when Radio 104.5 gave their single “Little Talks” its big U.S. debut. Tickets are in serious demand for their long-awaited visit to Philly, which promises to offer the most talked-about gigs of the week.
If you’re lucky enough to catch Of Monsters and Men on Tuesday, then you have a free space in your schedule for School of Seven Bells. The New York duo will take the stage at Johnny Brenda’s on Wednesday (April 4). The band has an expansive sound, but the gig should be an enjoyably intimate one thanks to Johnny Brenda’s up-close-and-personal layout.
To close out the week, head back to Union Transfer on Thursday (April 5) and check out Cursive. The indie rock veterans will be playing tracks from their latest album, this spring’s I Am Gemini, along with cuts from their previous six offerings.
